THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST By Oscar Wilde
The importance of being Earnest is a “trivial comedy for serious people!” The play is hilarious. It’s a normal love story (or stories?) with abnormal twists. The comedy satirizes the upper crust of Victorian conventions-respectability, marriage, and social obligations. The play tells the tale of two young men who bend the truth in order to escape family obligations and capture the hearts of their true loves. The ensuing chaos that results from their web of deceit leads to more surprises for all of those involved. The play is considered to be Oscar Wilde’s most brilliant work. A comedy par excellence, the play is deliciously written, it’s sumptuous, delightful and exquisite.
